NORTH AMERICAN AJ-1 SAVAGE


A U.S. Navy North American AJ-1 Savage (BuNo 122590) in flight over southern California (USA). This was the first production aircraft and it already crashed and burned near Bedford, Virginia (USA) on 22 June 1950 on a ferry flight from Edwards Air Force Base, California to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland (USA). The crew of three was killed. Note that it is not fitted with spinners.

The North American AJ Savage (later A-2 Savage) was a carrier-based bomber aircraft built for the United States Navy by North American Aviation. The original contract was awarded in June 1946, first flight 3 July 1948, and the plane entered service in 1949.
