BREWSTER SB2A BUCCANEER

FAA Brewster "Bermuda" FF741 (Source: USAF)

The Brewster SB2A Buccaneer was an American single-engined mid-wing monoplane scout/bomber aircraft built for the United States Navy during the early 1940s. It was also supplied to the United States Army Air Corps.

Design and development

The initial order for the aircraft was placed in 1941. Units powered by Wright Cyclone 14 radial engines were supplied to the United States Army Air Corps as the A-34. A version powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine was delivered to the Air Corps as the A-32.

Operational history

The RAF took delivery of some SB2A-1s under the terms of Lend-Lease where they were known as the Bermuda. They were used for training and target towing. Five of the Cyclone powered aircraft under the model number '340' were supplied to the British Fleet Air Arm, for assessment.
