The Percival Prince started out as a design by Percival Aircraft Ltd for a eight-seat airliner in 1947. Powered by two 500 hp Alvis Leonides radial engines, the P.50 Prince took to the air for the first time on May 13, 1948.

The Royal Navy began expressing interest in the Prince in 1949 when they were looking for candidates to meet two specifications. The first, specification T.17/19 called for a flying class room to train observers and C.18/19 which called for a communications aircraft. Percival Aircraft Ltd modified the design of the P.50 to meet specification T.14/49, the revised design being designated as P.57. This variant met with Admiralty approval and a contract was issued on October 25, 1949 for eighteen P.57 Sea Prince T Mk 1s and three communications variants designated as P.66 Sea Prince Mk 1.
